YOU HAVE BEEN INJURED, NOW WHAT?

THE DOs: 

  • Do immediately seek medical attention before doing anything else; 

  • Do get the license plate number of all other vehicles involved in car accidents, as well as all driver's names, addresses, telephone numbers and insurance information; 

  • Do get the name, address and telephone number of the animal's owner, as well as all license information if you were bitten or attacked by an animal; 

  • Do call the police to the scene of the accident; 

  • Do cooperate with all law enforcement or other first responders on scene; 

  • Do get the names, addresses and telephone numbers of all potential witnesses to the accident before they leave; 

  • Do take photographs of: (1) your injuries, including over the days, weeks and/or months that you heal; (2) the scene of the accident from all angles; (3) the animal and/or defective/dangerous product that caused your injuries; (4) any property damage (such as damage to the cars involved in the accident); and (5) the surrounding area. 

  • Do keep track of each doctor that you see; 

  • Do get an independent estimate for the damage to your vehicle; 

  • Do keep track of all work that you miss because of the accident and/or medical appointments and treatment; 

  • Do keep a journal of how you feel, both emotionally and physically after the accident through your recovery; 

  • Do contact a qualified attorney to assist you with your case. 

THE DON'Ts

  • DON'T call for help while remaining in a burning car or building, leave the dangerous area FIRST, then immediately call 911 or the police; 

  • DON'T move your car or vehicle after a car accident (unless it is absolutely necessary for safety and/or required by law); 

  • DON'T talk to anyone about who was at fault in the accident, and DON'T apologize for anything; 

  • DON'T expose yourself to additional injury by standing in the way of traffic or putting yourself in similar situations;

  • DON'T throw away evidence, such as bloodstained and/or ripped clothing, debris, car parts, and/or defective products; 

  • DON'T leave the scene of the accident until the police say it is okay; 

  • DON'T refuse medical attention because "it doesn't hurt that bad" or because "you can tough it out"; 

  • DON'T make any statements to an insurance company representative or adjuster, until you have consulted with a qualified attorney;

  • DON'T agree to any settlement terms without contacting a qualified attorney and having them review the settlement offer in conjunction with the property damage, your injuries, treatment and recovery status;
